I'm not going to lie, waking up to President Trump is a difficult pill to swallow today. He wasn't my choice but he is now my President and I accept it. I didn't expect him to even come close to winning, I was wrong.

However, I believe I understand why he was elected yesterday and it's not because he's some amazing candidate that will fix America's problems, make America great again, or even that Hillary was that bad of a candidate. He was chosen by the heart and soul of America, the working class people that feels our government has abandoned them. They want a president that sends a very clear and powerful message to the elites on both sides that everyday Americans can not be ignored anymore and if they are ignored, there will be consequences. I find myself oddly reassured that the American people hold this power and can exercise it when needed, like last night.

Trump has an extraordinary opportunity as President to actually work for the American people in a way that transcends political parties and ideology. Truthfully, as our president I want him to succeed, I want America to succeed. I hope he rises above the pettiness and vindictiveness he demonstrated in his campaign. I acknowledge he said and did things he needed to get elected. I don't expect him to keep all his campaign promises and I think it's naive to expect him to.

As Hillary said in her concession speech, we need to approach Trump with an open mind and he has earned the chance to lead. I will give him a fair shot and I know he will make mistakes, every President does but I think he is capable of accomplishing far more good than bad.

However, my optimism is cautious. If he abuses his power at the expense of the rights and freedoms we all hold sacred (first amendment, freedom of the press), he will need to be held accountable and the people that have supported him from the beginning will need to be there to keep him in check.

Moreover, what's unique about Trump is he really doesn't have a proven ideology. We still don't know who he really is or what he would be as the leader of the free world. This was my largest concern with him and why I couldn't vote for him. Ironically, this could prove to be his greatest strength because he can play on all sides, liberal and conservative, and work towards governing in the best interests of America. I hope he makes the most of his responsibility.

I wanted to get this in before the Election Board is taken down and I have to remain suspended from the political talk board.

Peace out.

Hugo

Nice post, Hugo, and I've seen similarly measured takes from other liberals here.
It raises the question, though...why were you such assholes when y'all thought y'all were winning?

This is deadnuts on the money. I think Trump is a straight up clown show, but you've elucidated exactly the reason a big part of me wanted him to win. It turns out that you cannot replace high paying blue collar work with part-time at McD's and go on about your day. We have a serious problem in the middle class in the country and the Rust Belt sent a message about it.

I've said all along that its no coincidence and Trump and Bernie rose simultaneously. They both rode the same wave with different remedies. Dems just had a mechanism in place to stomp out unwanted rebellion.

You still don't get it, do you? Without the press being exactly who they are, he does NOT get elected. He used them, and then he beat them at their own game after they turned on him.

Even if he remotely had any intention to govern like this (he doesn't), Trump is not going to touch the media, because their dishonesty not only helped him get elected but will further help him get his agenda passed.

frick you, You would have little problem if the Democrats abused their power and restricted the 2nd amendment, which by the way, ensures the continuation of the 1st amendment.
I agree that it was the deep underlying anger of the electorate that led to this victory but the pundits, media, and democrats still don't understand the reason for this anger nor the full implications of it.

I disagree with the overwhelming majority of your posts.
And I'd bet bucks you'd likely abhor my strong conservative values.
But I'd buy you a drink any time.

Throughout this process I've been afraid of what Trump would do if elected. I still am.

But, Trump the unknown is far, far, far preferable to what I KNOW sHitlary is (BOUGHT OFF PURE F*CKING FILTH) and what she definitely would have done.

I am not a 100% Trumpkin, but have never thought this was a threat from his election. But since you mentioned freedom of press, do you think they have a responsibility for unbiased reporting? Do you think the press has the right to not only report what they want but to report it in a manner that is directly designed to influence people?

maybe he should open his presidency by telling everyone to shut up and their is a new sheriff in town. Like his predecessor?
