Defensive play calling against Moo State

All of the talk has been about the offense and lack of passing and not much about the new DC.
I absolutely LOVED the aggression from our defense. On third down you could almost bank on pressure coming from somewhere. If it was 3rd and long you could get the punt team ready, because they weren't picking up many yards.
I don't know if the end of the game was more about MSU making good adjustments, or if we just ran out of gas, but quality depth may be the only problem I see at certain positions.
Our front four even seemed to get a decent amount of pressure whenever we weren't blitzing. It was a thing of beauty to watch and much needed for this LSU team. Can't wait to watch this defense grow together, and for Steele and Coach O to bring some solid depth to the program on the defensive side of the ball.

If LSU can keep O in the fold for a couple of years the Dline will be back to the glory days

The end of the game was about difficulty with pace and the tackles (who played a ton of snaps) being subbed out for Franklin Delano Herron and Greg Gilmore. We also went to a more vanilla zone look to attempt to stave off the big play. What was concerning was our corners were not breaking on the ball like I would have hoped from a zone look. Also, Dak did a good job attacking the flats behind our blitzes. Just be thankful the Hunchback didn't give up on the run until the fourth quarter.

Giving up only 43 yards rushing on 26 carries (1.7 ypc) is awesome.
Pass defense was good. Easy to criticize the yards given up and number of plays & 1st downs... but considering how much they yielded, they did a fantastic job of tackling the receivers instantly. I don't think Ms. St. had many yards after catch. And they tightened up when Ms. St. would move towards the red zone, too. Also, I don't think the dbs ever got beat long.
Early in game, especially, it was nice to see the blitzing & pressure.
If LSU's offense did a better job sustaining drives in the 2nd half, I think the defense would've seemed outright dominant. As it was, they still looked good-- very good at times.
I think the biggest need for the defense is to work on developing depth-- especially on the front 7-- to keep the players fresh. If the offense starts clicking, that will certainly help.

Steele was calling blitzes like it was 2011. And it wasn't just a straight ahead bull rush of players (ahem Chavis) it was well schemed and disguised. The D line was stunting, safeties were delayed blitzing, linebackers were dropping back and there were some DB blitzes from the outside. It looked like a refined scheme.
I think if we had more depth in the front 7 where we could sub in guys more frequently, we'd have had more success in the 4th quarter. We need more T.O.P. and support from the offense though, because I think we're lacking quality depth up front. This is my biggest concern versus Auburn and their up tempo offesne.

I loved the fact that our DL stunted/twisted.
Also nice seeing the creativity with the blitzing...think Debo showed blitz on the B then shot overtop the DL into the A gap that yielded a sack
