Alabama Power workers consider all wires live and regularly work on them as such.
My neighbor was told by one of workers for Alabama Power to turn off the main breaker, he has a 400 amp main breaker at the top of his panel next to the meter, and that will keep it from back feeding. If your panel does not have a main, I assume you could cut off all the double breakers in that panel to achieve the same result.
What you are wanting to do is very dangerous.
I have a natural gas Generac unit that has a transfer switch. That is what I recommend you get. They are worth the money.

They probably all do now since so many people have generators. But if it checks out as dead and then 5min later some momo 3 miles away cranks his generator up then the line could be live again. Linemen have enough to think without some idiot periodically energizing the line .
