I'm going out to Hackberry Sunday morning with a buddy to try to find some reds. We are going to be launching at the West Cove Canal lauch on Hwy 27. I've been crabbing at the launch a few times, but I've never launched or fished the area. Any advice would be appreciated. Any particular areas I need to check out? I'll be in a 14ft flat bottom with a 15hp outboard, so I know my options are limited.

I have some artificial bait already, but I'm curious if there is any place near there I can get live shrimp? Or are we just gonna have to use dead shrimp and artificial?

Call Spicer's Marina and see if they have any live shrimp. They did last week but the guides usually buy them out pretty early. The big winds last week kind of messed the lake up but it should be getting right this weekend. I would fish the north part of the lake if I was going. Possibly Black Lake as well. I am not sure how that storm in the gulf will affect things so keep an eye on the weather.

Where would you suggest launching a 14ft boat in the north and where would you fish?

If I am going to be honest, I probably wouldn't fish out in the main lake in a 14ft boat. I missed that in your original post. I have even seen the ship channel get really choppy with the right wind and boat traffic. Black Lake has been picking up as the water temp is dropping a bit. Take a left out of Spicers and fish the marsh on your way to it. Turner's has also been decent along the ship channel.

If you are dead-set on going there are a few launches. Calcasieu Point has the nicest launch on the lake but they have been dry on shrimp most of the year. Intracoastal Park has a launch under the Hwy 27 bridge that isn't bad but you'll have to run to Hackberry if you want live shrimp.

I don't plan on going into the main lake at all. I was going to launch off of Hwy 27 and take the west cove canal to the marsh area around hog island. I have a buddy who was considering launching by Hwy 384 (Fred's Lounge on Big Lake Road) and fishing in Turner Bay in a kayak. Now I've never been to that area, but I'd think if he can fish it in a kayak I'd be fine in my little boat. Again, I don't plan on going into the open water. I was planning on staying is the marsh areas.

You wouldn’t be the only person fishing the Cameron Jetties in this set-up if you went

I don't know if it's changed any since they've dredged and changed the marsh....but when the tide is running we always fished the cut that goes into West Cove. Looking at Google maps...it looks like it's still there.

We've killed the reds and flounder in that area when the tides were right. Never had luck with slack tide...only good running tides.

Where are the Cameron jetties? Is that the same as the old jetties?

My intentions were to fish the marsh area around the canal. What area are you speaking of with similar set ups as mine?

Eta: Work fricked my plans up, but one weekend soon I want to chase the reds in that area.

Follow the ship channel into the gulf. Jetties are on your left.

How do you get to Turner Bay from Fred's in a kayak? Is there a way to get there without taking the main canals (that appears to be about 4+ miles of kayaking).

No real shortcut, you must pay the iron price to get to Turners from Fred's.

Another option is to put in at Spicers and paddle through the Texaco Cut. Another long arse option, but an option nonetheless.

That’s not 4 miles, T.
2-3 tops I’d say.

I hope lol
