Mississippi State is no cupcake. Handle our business against them and we could move into the Top 10. I think we are ranked appropriately at the moment but if we lose be ready to fall into 20s.

If we're undefeated heading into October we will be in the Top 10. Make it to November undefeated we're top 5. Undefeated Dec. 1st we're looking at a top 2 seed in the playoff.

Obviously the ranking doesn't matter when you're undefeated. It's when we lose a game that it matters. Because of our ranking, if we were to finish 11-1 we'd miss the playoffs because of Ohio State FSU getting the nod ahead of us as one loss teams because of where they started

Agree MSU should not be considered a cupcake. They are well coached but the talent is always a question....They could be a soft 6-6 team or a solid 8-4 team. Too early in the year to draw any conclusions at this stage of the game if we beat them.
Yes I'll be encouraged...but a rankings jump from beating MSU....no.

the playoff committee decides on who gets into the playoff, not the silly rankings. Ignore them.
Our sole focus should be winning the West, and then the SEC. Do that, and we're a virtual lock to make the playoff.
In your 11-1 scenario, if our sole loss is to an undefeated Alabama, then we're almost certainly not getting in the playoff, because the committee will be very hesitant to put in two teams from the same conference. That would mean two Power5 conference champs get left out - and that's highly, highly unlikely to happen.
Forget the rankings - just win the West.

As long as we don't lose, we could move up before the Florida game solely based upon teams above us losing.

It's funny how fans get so caught up in rankings. Bottom line is, if we win, we'll be there. Period. Rankings don't mean shite if you can't win. Win and everything will take care of itself.

Funny how it's one of the first things you check each week, not to mention what dominates debate amongst pundits, and directly sets the stage for the selection committee debate. You think the selection committee is looking at teams ranked outside the top ten for the playoffs. Nope. Get off your high horse.

Lsu beats Florida to remain undefeated, they will be top 5. There will be some teams lose over the next month, plus they will eventually jump teams ahead of them that have already lost.

I am sure that on espn games, everyone has noted that ESPN puts the higher ranking between the ap and the coaches poll in their ads for the game.
