Any of y'all have a separate meter for your workshop or another building on your property? If so do you get charged a separate rate for the 2nd meter? Just compared my bills and they are charging me more than double per KWH for my shop than my house.

You are being charged a flat customer charge on each meter. Also, there's two energy charge rates. 1 for using under a certain amount then another above that threshold. That's why they are not proportionally the same.

just spent 30 min on phone with Entergy, because its not a residence my shop is considered a commercial account and thus chargable at a higher rate. My house power bill is $143 with $24 being for a security light and my shop is $41

You may not hit the minimum kilowatt hour charge. So you are getting a flat charge.

Mine is flat charged during the winter and the fans run it over that amount during the summer.

Thankfully, they accidentally credited my account 600 bucks about three years ago so I don't have a bill for another few months

How far is from the house to the shop? My shop is on the same meter as the house.

Why is your shop on a separate meter?

I know my dad put his on one due to all the power tools he had in there not to mention it was a good 300 feet behind his house.. Lots of 220v wood working equipment. I think a separate meter is a good idea if doing some light industrial hobby work such as welding or large power tools.

I didn't build the shop but I would have split it regardless even knowing the higher rate as its 150' from house and I have welding machine, plasma cutter, table saw, dust collector, etc. that all draw alot of amps that would max out a 200 amp service trying to share it with the house pretty quick. Especially if I get around to putting an A/C in it. Its an extra $20 a month so not the end of the world but just pisses me off.

Mine is seperate because its about 300' from the house. Im in MS in a rural area. I get a farm rate for it. Usually around $20-22 in the winter and $35ish summer. I have a frig, freezer, 12 sets of lights, 4 ceiling fans and an attic fan. I have various power tools as well as golf cart on a charger. Boat, tractor, and ztr on trickle charger during winter

On the flip side is another meter necessary? I have a shop about 300' from the main panel of the house. In the shop I have two 220 circuits, three 110 circuits, lights, mini split, 220 table saw, band saw, most wood working tools and nock on wood I've never had a problem. Oh I also have two side by side freezers going out there. I am not convinced you need another meter on a shop?

I'd have to upgrade the service to my house in order to have enough amps to push both, cost to do so as well as run new line to my shop would take 20 years to re-coup. $240/year is not the end of the world just pisses me off. Eventually building a mancave loft in shop and will try and re-classify it as residential.

I have two lots at the camp. Storage bulding is a seperate address, so I pay 2 damn power bills (which include 2 "member fee" or some shite). I'm not sure if they would do 2 different meters with the same address.
