Anyone have experience of Bermuda grass holding its own with dogs?

I've got a small backyard with 2 large dogs. When I bought the house, the grass in the back was in really good shape (centipede I think) but now almost nonexistent. Mostly sand and weeds. I've learned since then in Florida in this sandy soil you can't get by with watering 3 days a week like I was. Add in wear from the dogs and the yard didn't stand a chance.

From everything I've read, it seems like Bermuda is a good choice for me to throw some sod down and increase the irrigation cycle but was wondering if anyone had any experience with this same situation.

If not, any suggestions?

Bermuda will definitely be more tolerant to foot traffic. Look at the "Sahara" variety. Very tolerant to infrequent watering, as the name suggests.

Watering isn't a problem, there was already a good in ground irrigation system when I bought. I just wasn't used having to water that much before. Going from Louisiana and watering only during droughts to Florida and watering all the time through me for a loop. Especially with all the rain.

Does your average sod farm carry many varieties (like Sahara) as opposed to types (Bermuda, st aug, etc)?

Bermuda is the most drought tolerant. Don't cut it too low.

Average sod farm will probably carry Tifway 419. Sahara seed can be found fairly easily.

I don't remember which Bermuda I have but I don't water as much. 2-3 times a week for longer (20 min per zone) so the roots will go deeper.

I fertilize 2-3 times a year and also put out ironite once a year. I am not in FL so I have different dirt but I do have 3 dogs.

Yeah with centipede down here I was watering 3x a week for 40 in each zone and it still wasn't enough. Some areas of the yard are damn near straight sand. Another guy in my unit lives across the street and says he goes twice a day every day to keep his going.
