quote:

You know, I will just say this: John Lewis ought to look at history," LePage, who's white, said on WVOM-FM. "You know, it was Abraham Lincoln that freed the slaves. It was Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant that fought against Jim Crow laws. A simple 'thank you' would suffice."

quote:

Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and pushed for the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. But historians say LePage is wrong about Jim Crow laws, which legalized racial segregation. Jim Crow laws didn't exist during the Grant administration and an electoral deal that put Hayes in office led to the end of Reconstruction and the removal of federal troops, setting the stage for the creation of Jim Crow laws that followed, said Colby professor Dan Shea.

quote:

"Paul LePage is going to give John Lewis a tutorial on the history of black oppression in the United States? That's rich," Shea said.

And yes, Lewis is a fool too

To be fair, it's not like someone from Maine would know about any of this. It's whiter than my arse.

One major positive of this whole elections is it'd showed that we have a lot of fools in powerful government positions.

Unfortunately, partisanship makes people ignore the fools on their side too easily.

Not make ignorant and false statements, especially after saying Lewis is the one who "ought to look at history". Not to tell him to say "thank you" to republican presidents and politicians for all their forefathers did for civil rights

Are the hundreds of thousands of northern white boys whose bones lie under the dirt of eastern America not worthy of a thank you from the people they freed?

It depends, of course, on whether they gave their life for that purpose or for another, or if it was done willingly at all.

They're dead. ANd how does he know that Lewis have never made a statement about slavery and the sacrifices the north soldiers made? and Lewis also had the sheote beat out of him too by racists. Not sso ure the northerners who fought had a hand in making life all that easy for him in his formative years

He is a GA congressman. I don't really care. But prior to that he has accomplished more than pretty much anyone here.

So they've both made fools of themselves? So they're even on the "Fool Scale"?

So now the metric becomes who has made a fool of themselves more often..the Maine Governor, or John Lewis? How do you tally in your opinion?

He doesn't understand Republican Party was once the progressive liberal party. Apparently a lot of you don't either. I'm a liberal and would have been considered a Republican in 1860.

For a recent example, look at the South during civil rights movement.

You made my point for me. You idiots have given him a THIRTY YEAR pass of doing not a fricking thing and want to call us racists for calling him out on it.

Although their efforts certainly freed slaves, it was not their intent. Even the EP did not free slaves in the North. It was a plot to weaken the south. Hence freeing slaves only in the confederacy (where they had no jurisdiction at the time).

I'm no confederate sympathizer or anything. Just hate those who think the north was so compassionate towards slaves. They were not a fan of slavery but still saw blacks as unequal. Lincoln even stated he believedid they weren't equals to whites.

There was a fundamental disagreement on slavery. Not on racial equality. Not in the least.

It's not quite so cut and dry as reversing the liberal/conservative paradigm, but yes, one could say the the nascent Republican party of the 1850s was the progressive party, although its coziness and love of big business might disgust your modern day equivalent.

You're conflating a few things in your liberal definition. Your point being in 1860 it would be considered liberal to be anti-slavery. Generally true, but the term now includes a lot of "non-liberal" thinking, e.g., living off the state, victimhood, et.al.

I did not vote for him, much less live in GA. I would not have voted for him if I did. Nor did I call anyone racist for calling him out. In case you missed it, I also called him a fool in the OP. But YOU made my point. Stereotyping those on the left with a broad-stroked biased brush.
