What exactly are you trying to do?

Run software to backup to an external drive? Or run software from an external drive to backup...where?

I want to back up a computer to an external (usb) drive. I cannot install the software on the computer I want to back up. Thus, I am looking for backup software that can be installed and run from the external (usb) drive that will backup a computer.

Windows 7. No, requires admin privileges which I do not have.

Ok... What exactly are you trying to backup? The whole pc or just select files? Any backup software I've use requires something to be installed on the pc or admin rights to allow the backup. The only thing I can think of is..

1) backing up files would be done manually by copying and pasting (drag and drop) to the external drive. If this is only a few folders, you could automate it with a batch file using robocopy and run the batch file as a scheduled task.

2) I'm sure you can find a live boot cd (linux) to help backup the pc. This is really only helpful if your windows craps out and you need to backup/recover files.

Yes I did this copying the Documents folder. It is so big, it took forever. I am looking for a backup program that after initially running, would only pull over files that were changed, added/deleted.

If you don't mind the manual method, SyncToy does this. Only pulls new or changes files. Can choose to overwrite or save new versions of everything.

I did this for my personal backup to an external. It was set on a schedule, but it was installed on the main machine.

Why dont you ask the owner of the laptop to provide a method to backup the files?

Any idea why the IT Dept that restricts your permissions doesn't also provide a backup method?

Look for an ISO online and do it that way. Can you put the computer to safeboot and use the USB from there?

They are evaluating options but who knows how long that will take. Currently been evaluating for a couple of months.

What you're looking for is called a portable app. Here are a couple that I found from a google search. I have no experience with either of them.
