Purchasing Reconditioned Cell Phone on Ebay

Can anyone offer any advice puchasing a reconditioned phone on ebay? Purchasing for high school son and don't want to pay $400+ for a new phone.

ps what phone are you looking to buy? i'll say for a little under $200, the nexus 6 is going to be the best bang-for-your-buck IMO. i picked one up for $190 a few months back and i'm absolutely in love with the thing.

This terrifies me. How do I know there isn't something on the phone that is going to steal my data and forward it somewhere. Phishing kind of. I'm too paranoid.

Paid for an Iphone on ebay a few months ago. Was a total scam. never got the phone and the seller never responded. Ebay refunded the payment after seller didn't respond. Many posters on other boards have had the same experience.
