I'd say his era is the post-standup boom. He's the spearhead of the alt-comedy boom which started in the late 90s and has flourished the last few years. Remember, he was the headliner of the Comedians of Comedy tour, one of the first comedy tours to play rock clubs instead of comedy clubs, and Zach Galifinakis' big break. At the time it was filmed, Brian Posehn was the #2 name, not Zach (though I think Maria Bamford is actually the second best comic on that absolutely loaded tour... she's a deranged genius).
Dave Chappelle had a high peak, but he hasn't kept putting in work year after year, decade after decade. And I'm not counting anything BUT standup. Chappelle is a gifted sketch comedy writer/performer. There's more credit for the guys who do the George Carlin thing: do a special and then start the next day with a blank sheet of paper until you have another special next year. Volume, and the constant touring matters.

This is becoming the norm with most of your bigger comedians now. Write and work out a new set in smaller comedy clubs. Tour with that set for a year. Film a special somewhere in that year. Start over next year scratch.
Jim Norton, Bill Burr, Tom Segura, Louis CK (when he is doing strictly stand up and not acting) have all been following this model lately. It's starting to become the standard.

Man, that's rough. I don't know where to start or where to begin, man.

You wouldn't give a crippled crab a crutch. Well played.

Patton is maybe the best standup of his era.
Patton Oswalt is one of my favorites, but Louis CK is the best standup of his era.
Again, no disrespect to Patton Oswalt. He's got some really good bits and I've enjoyed some of his dramatic work as well (Big Fan).
