Trailer

Given how the History Channel has a tendency to absolutely butcher history in their miniseries (see Texas Rising), I don't have high hopes for this one.

I never saw the 70s miniseries, but I noticed it was on Amazon Prime, so I'm gonna give it a try.

Does Melissa McCarthy play Kunta Kinte?

The original was a national event. EVERYBODY watched it.

It also still holds up rather well, once you get past the fact some parts of "Africa" look suspiciously like "Korea" and "Hazzard County, Georgia".

John Amos is great, as are LeVar Burton and Louis Gosset, Jr.

Isn't 85-90% of Alex Haley's story fiction to begin with?

Didn't really care for the first one, doubt I'll watch this one.

I'll check it out.

On a somewhat related note, King Kunta is currently my favorite song. I'll probably listen to that 5 times a day while working out.

It was the closest thing we had to binge watching a new series. Watching the same new show every night for a week seemed insane at the time.

I forced the family to watch the original a couple years ago (bought the DVDs). I remembered it being a lot better in my youth, but that's the case with a lot of oldies. Definitely a powerful story that everyone should see, but I do think a remake is in order for it to have the same impact I remember from the original airing. I'd watch for sure.
ETA: On a related note, I watched Amistad for the first time yesterday. Powerful film.

It's no "Centennial," "Shogun" or "How The West Was Won," but it was a pretty good mini-series.

More than half of American households.

Only MASH farewell beats it.

Lonesome Dove and Band of Brothers were the best by far. However, Roots was really good for the time. However, I am wondering as well if History will change it up becuase of the the story being discredited. History isn't known for its accuracy in programming though. If it is like Texas, it will be horrible.

A Roots remake is 100% about profits and is shameful. I will not be watching. Maybe the History channel will have a pop up version showing little bubble blurbs with facts as Kunta Kinte gets whipped.

"Oh, yeah. I'll be watchin'. I'll be watching to reminisce about the good ole days when the white man gave us an all expense paid cruise across the Atlantic, room and board, and plenty of exercise in the fresh air. Yessir.... I'll sho' be watching and thankful!"
