Especially the southern part. Is $1258/year about right for a home appraised around $220K?

$2200 for 650 sq ft condo in the warehouse dist.

Texas high property taxes is due to no state income tax, correct?

Off hand it sounds a little low, but should be able to find millage rate online and compute

That's about right based on a rough milage estimate for unincorporated EBR assuming you are using homestead exemption.

Our brilliant new governor is trying to raise the property tax.

I doubt many OT'ers voted for him but it's worth mentioning

What you should be asking is how much are you paying for services that could be provided by the state. As the guy up there said about the Woodlands, we pay around 8-9k a year between property taxes and the MUD tax (a utilities tax that varies by neighborhood). Also time spent in traffic has a very real monetary value. All the neighborhoods are well-planned here so I spend less time in traffic (which is surprising considering the slightly longer commute and larger population).

I just moved out of Baton Rouge, had a house that sold for $220k - house was smaller and I had to pay for 3 kids to go to private school. Here I forgo the private school, kids get a good education, and I don't pay state income tax. It was a no-brainer for me.

Of course he is. Most of the people that voted for him are renters to slum-lords. Raising property taxes does nothing but spin up more bureaucratic jobs to support services that taxpayers will never be able to use.
