Video playback skipping on Mac

I have perused several Mac boards, and it seems to be a consistent issue. When I upload home movies from my camera or phone the video is very choppy. I don't have the same issue when watching a DVD or streaming content in a browser.
One proposed fix is to use VLC or some other 3rd party extension. Currently the problem persists in QuickTime and or when viewing through Photos.
This problem seems to have started around the time I upgraded to Mavericks, and has persisted with El Capitan. Interestingly, when I downloaded videos from my camera onto my phone they play perfectly. It's just frustrating when trying to view home movies on my computer.

I have this problem with go pro video, but once I edit and publish it goes away. I think it's the raw video my computer just can't handle.
