A 24-year-old salon manager was killed after apparently being locked inside a cryochamber, where authorities said she likely suffocated.

Chelsea Ake, the manager of Rejuvenice in Henderson, Nevada, was found dead last week inside the salon’s cryochamber by distraught coworkers.

Ake is believed to have been gone into the machine on her own and likely suffocated inside, authorities with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said to Nevada’s KSNV news station.

Investigators ruled the death an “operator error.”

Cryotherapy is used as an alternative to cold-water immersion or ice packs, with claims of weight loss, health benefits, and skin rejuvenation. Lindsay Lohan helped popularize the practice this past June by posting about it on social media.

Machines are not meant to be used for more than three minutes because temperatures drop as low as minus 240 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ake’s body was found inside the ice machine after she’d likely been in there for at least 10 hours, authorities said.

There is no way I would go into that thing for 3 minutes. Does the lid come down or something? It looks open at the top. How could she suffocate?

If the temperature in this contraption is in the range given it likely uses liquid nitrogen to get down that low, and I am guessing she probably asphyxiated from somehow breathing nitrogen gas as opposed to suffocation.

They need a safety latch on things like that and tanning beds. No idea why they don't have them. Some kind of handle that isn't extremely effected by the temps and allows you to open the door. Just doesn't make sense not to have safety features

Not deliberately going into liquid nitrogen temperature boxes would be pretty smart too.
