we recently had the house remodeled, and with it a total rewire and brand new breaker box. vacuum cleaner keeps throwing a breaker. what is causing that to happen?

I'm not much on residential. maybe the connection in the vacuum plug is bad. Afci breaker?

Meaning a walk around vac, like plug into the wall type? If so and your home was wired correctly it's tripping the arc fault breaker. This has been an issue for a while.
Try plugging it into the bath, washer or kitchen outlets and see what happens.
Some vacs draw a lot too, so the normal wall outlets are generally under a 15 amp breaker which could be close to the max depending on what else is on that circuit.

Overloading the breaker.
Short in vac
Short in that particular circuit
Those are the possible reasons.

Next time you go to Home depot or Lowes pick yourself up a Kill-A-Watt Monitor. It a good tool to help you troubleshoot your electrial problem.

Is it just the vacuum or is anything else tripping it?
And is the vacuum tripping anything other breakers?

Did your vacuum ever do that before? Try it in different outlets?

Those new arc breakers which are now required by code do not like vacuum cleaners and other things with motors.

My arc fault breakers did the same thing. You can either deal with it or swap them out with regular 20 amp breakers

First I've heard of Arc Fault breakers. I could see the potential for a lot of stuff tripping these. Do all recetacles have to be arc fault protected or just certain ones like not all receptacles have to be GFCI protected.

Pretty much everywhere if the code enforcement is using the latest codes. Lot's
are not though.
