Microsoft for MacPro

Just bought a MacPro from BestBuy and the salesman said the only way to get Microsoft Office for the Mac is by subscription. $79 for the program and you have to renew it every year at $79. Anyone know if this is the only way to get Microsoft Office loaded on MacPro? Why can't you just buy the program and load it and it be good forever, like it has always been? My wife bought a Mac about a year ago and I didn't encounter this problem. At that time we bought Microsoft Office and no renewal was needed yearly.

The new Office for Mac 2016 just came out. Right now the only option is the Office 365 subscription, but you can buy a standalone version in a few months.
It looks like you can get the standalone 2011 Office right here if you need it right now.

That's my suggestion for the full retail price route. Hold off today and see if someone knows of cheaper option.

One thing that could make the Office 365 subscription worthwhile is the 1TB of cloud storage. $6.99/mo with Office vs $9.99/mo of 1TB Google storage.

I'm assuming if you go the yearly subscription route, you're automatically entitled to any new versions that come out?
I have a Macbooks coming to me in the next couple weeks and am thinking about doing that. I have 2011 version...but man they are slow as the fugg. Could be my almost 4 year old imac..but still. Can't hurt to have the latest and greatest.

Yes, and I think the Office 2011 will be phased out of the security updates after awhile. I got the 365 subscription when Office 2016 came out. It was a good time to upgrade, and I also wanted Word on my iPad so I could type stuff out in Mongolian with a visible cyrillic keyboard. But I'm pretty sure nobody else needs to do that.

quote:IMO ..Office 2011 for Mac is functional at best for me. If you use Office on a PC at work and use it a lot...the Mac version just different enough to be difficult to maneuver around quickly. Then again I use a lot if shortcuts and get frustrated when I have to use Excel on the Mac at home...

I'm probably just bite the bullet and get the subscription version. I'm guessing the full standalone version they'll release later this year will be a couple hundred anyway.
