The pot is aluminum. Or are u asking about iron in the water? Oh and the basket is fine

The title caught me off guard but I have been lurking on the OT today. I thought that was normal, but I've always had well water.

Minerals leached into your well?
Any mining near by?

I'm thinking minerals in water might by fricking it up. But I have no idea.

Guess the big question is, is it trash now?

Don't know, but mine has been that way for years...

Highly alkaline water will turn it black. They suggest boiling vinegar in it and scrubbing with SOS pads.

You left water in there for a very long time, that's what turned the aluminum black

Minerals in the boil. Doesn't affect the aluminum. If you don't like staining or having your pot infused with smells, use high quality stainless.

Define a long time. I filled it, lit the fire finished boiling and dumped when cooled down

Just boil some vinegar and water or lemons and water for a while and it'll be great--until next time. Minerals in the water will do it pretty quick. Had one I thought i had ruined. Made some muscadine jelly in it (alum pot like a miniature crawfish pot)-stain GONE. I have repeated with lemons and it worked. You could also just leave it like it is.
