The good ol days of Postscript(tm) and 300 dpi lasers

Technology has come so far..back in the late 1980s when I got into desktop publishing I was amazed I could *PROGRAM* in postscript to get it to render fonts at any size!! Y'all laugh about this now but I used to layout a newsletter and about 50% of the fonts on the page looked like an 8bit video game when I printed it out.
you kids dont know how good you have it.
Aldus was the KING with PageMaker and Freehand..both supported postscript natively.
Letraset (king of vinyl lettering used by ad agencies for 100 years) tried to take the market by introducting $1500 software like LetraStudio to do photo editing and newsletter layout but they were crushed into dust much like Kodak and Smith Wesson.
Upstart companies like Macromind and Adobe were hot on the heels of Aldus with Illustrator which the USENET forums were OVERWHELMED with people debating why Freehand was better or Illustrator was better. Nothing has changed, now we're bitching over phones.
Apple was busy introducing 160x120 8fps 256 colors QuickTime technology which would only work on a Mac IIci or higher and people laughed their arse off that a computer would ever be fast enough to make QuickTime more than a postage stamp novelty.
I was being courted by 2 hot but ultimately FAILURE companies in Taligent and Kalieda and while I'm glad I didn't pack up and head to CALI, I probably would have found something else out there after they closed their doors.
Now nobody gives a shite about tools that allow your PC to make PRINT shite look better. Those tools seem stupid these days..who cares about printing stuff?

I used Superscript as a way quickly compose and edit papers, but to actually print them with any formatting at all required embedded escape codes for the printer. That meant thumbing through the back of the printer manual and threw off pagination (there was no such thing as WYSIWYG).
So after hacking out the words I wanted to say I printed a copy of that and took it to the library to type and format with a good old IBM Selectric.
