If your 2-year contract is up, you can get the 2-year commitment price. They just hide that from you as well as they can.

Also, for those on grandfathered unlimited plans, AT&T Next is a foolish choice. Otherwise, if you were suckered into moving from your grandfathered plan to one of the newer ones already, then yeah, you shouldn't probably do AT&T Next, but pay the phone off instead of rent.

The argument against next may be valid as far as turning the phone in, but you don't have to do that. If you don't, all you did was finance the phone at 0% interest and paid off over 20 or 24 months. You can always just sell your phone to someone and buy a new phone and just pay the remaining payments off.

Exactly. You can turn it in if you want or you can keep it and pay off the remaining installments and still get the newer phone. It's not like I thought in the beginning at all.

For example why would i not rather pay $49 for a galaxy s4 be locked into a two year agreement than pay $25/month ($300 a year) for the same phone?

Because when you upgrade your rate plan goes up $15-$25 per line per month. Technically it's not having the discount you get with AT&T Next and is the same plan they've had for years. If you go for older models you'd probably be better off buying a phone off Amazon or ebay. You get the $15-$25 per month discount of AT&T Next plus since you want older models you can probably save anywhere from $50-$200 on the cost of the phone.

You also get a $25 a month discount when you are not under contract

Not all the time.

My aunt signed up for it because it ended up being cheaper in the long run for the Galaxy S4 Mini.

You don't pay an activation fee when you use the Next plan, which saves $40. And the monthly fee was like 13$ as opposed to the $15 monthly fee for subsidized pricing. She's planning to have that same phone for longer than 2 years, so at that point the extra 13$ will drop off her bill. In that case, it was cheaper to go with the Next program.

Most new smartphones and iPhones will not be cheaper, and you will end up paying more in the long run with Next. Just saying in some situations, it's actually a little cheaper.

In that sense why does it even matter if I'm due for an "upgrade" if I'm paying full price for phone.

You've always paid full price for the phone, it was just built into the contract.

ETA: On my next phone if i go with the NEXT plan, it will end up being about $120 cheaper over 24 months than if I bought the phone at a subsidized price.

I am grandfathered into unlimited and use over 10 GBs a month so I ain't swapping. My MIL did the next plan and it averaged out to the same in the long run. Except they get charged extra when they go over.

Because they've all come down from about $40 for an access fee per line (on top of your data) to about $15.

What do you think that $25 was going for? Subsidizing the cost of your phone.

You didn't really think smartphones were free did you?

I just talked to ATT and my monthly plan would not be discounted if I did the next program. I have unlimited data so that might be why. I would still be paying 89.99 a month which includes unlimited data and txt then what the phone is.

You're essentially buying a phone off-contract, and hopefully unlocked. Once you do that (assuming you bought it at T-Mobile or ATT) you can take the sim card out, go to another carrier, and get their service, with no problem, and without needing the first carrier's permission.

Worked awesome for me when I went to Europe. I bought an unlocked phone in the states, when I got to Europe walked into a Virgin Mobile in Dublin, got a new sim card, and an Irish number. ATT wanted to charge me like $100 for 250MB of data- Virgin gave 1 GB to me for like 10 euro.

tl:dr- it's cheaper to get a phone unlocked. If the service sucks you can change it whenever you want b/c it's your phone.

You can still do the xxx dollar upgrade option with a 2 year contract. You just have to go to bestbuy. aTT just isn't doing it In their stores.
