Whatever happened to playing defense in college football?

Last week, Top 25 offenses averaged 506 yards, 43 points and 6.86 yards per play. Granted a number of teams played cupcakes. So far, the offenses have the advantage. Will this trend continue as teams move into conference play?

Week 2 is a horrible week to go off of.

The games are too long (too many clock stoppages), there are too many hurry up no huddle offenses and high schools are churning out more quality offensive skill players than ever.

All the conferences besides the SEC decided to focus on nothing but offense and then sat around wondering why the SEC was in the national championship every year.

The definition of "playing defense" at any level of football has changed dramatically since offenses have evolved into uptempo spread attacks. Rules changes consistently favor offensive football as well. Why do you think Nick Saban and Brett Bielema were so adamant about changing the clock rules and when the ball can be snapped? They see the era of "good defense" slipping away, or at the very least, seeing a definition change.

We should revisit this topic after September, imo.
