Here's the Clarion Ledger story on the incident. Has more details.

For you that aren't from here, Jackson Preparatory is an elite private school in the Jackson suburbs. Many doctors in the stands watching the game - doctor saw him on the sideline and advised him to go to the ER. They went by private vehicle instead of ambulance.

The story hints of it, but there is a lot of speculation that if he would have been transported by ambulance, he may have made it, as they could have gotten him oxygen and things that he needed. The hospital is a 10 minute drive without traffic, and he went in as a normal ER patient instead of via ambulance. Time was a factor. He had a seizure in the ER and never came out of it.

What would the paramedic have done? Started an IV, adding to the over hydration? Where would water intoxication and hyponatremia fall in the list of differential diagnoses being listed most likely to least likely? It is surprising that an ambulance was not employed if it was sitting there, but the paramedics would have spent time on the scene assessing while the parents were driving. I doubt anyone really knew what was going on until they got the ER with lab work and other tests. It is difficult to reverse once it has started. Much will be made of it but I don't see where it would have made much difference. I wonder if the dr was misquoted though when he said it was "unavoidable".
