Something to remember when talking about solar power

The number of arrays needed for significant generation is quite large (takes alot of area).
Here is an example: In the southeast it takes 3 acres of arrays to generate enough electricity to power a small Walmart.
Just sharing, and caring.

Twenty years ago, nuke power plans were the biggest danger to mans survival.
If Solar was cost efficient, and business was booming, the giant shadows cast by those arrays would be the next big threat to mankind. Its always something.

Tidal energy seems to be making some noise as well. ABB just signed a $600+MM project

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has been awarded a contract by Atlantis Resources Limited to provide the onshore grid connection for Phase I of the MeyGen tidal stream project in Scotland’s Pentland Firth. The MeyGen tidal stream project is at the forefront of world marine energy development and will harvest the tidal resources of one of the most energetic maritime sites

Wind turbines kill birds, solar arrays fry them, coal pollutes the air, nuclear will zap us, tidal will kill fish............... we are DOOMED.

Yeah...that was really big 40 years ago. Didn't work. Why not try it again?

well because it might interfere with some precious barnacle or sea slug reproduction cycle, ergo the EPA won't allow it.
yea part of the problem with Solar is that the junior-progressive league Algore fan clubbies read some Popular Science(fiction) article that tells them Solar IS HERE! and they believe the trash.
There is no magnitude of gain in photo-voltaic cell technology nor is there likely to be one in our lifetime, people often confuse Moore's law with all semi-conductor technology and think somehow some hyper threaded, super conducting solar cell is just lurking around the corner, well it isn't and it's not coming. Solar cell limitations are very much real physical parameters that aren't going to conveniently just go away because the youth league movement hopes (for the change) that they will.
Still there are some useful applications, especially for individuals to apply some home solar panels to help with cooling, especially in the south and southwest areas of the US. This would help slow down the increase in load on the grid and keep power costs in line and less concentrated.
Idiots who think government making it happen are only going to get in the way by supporting the nonsense like the "green movement" politicians that have no real value other than lining their own pockets.

I would love to see the underwater turbines anchored in the MS river, but apparently they kill some fish so permitting is tough.

If somebody could find a way to make them cheap enough that owners could atleast break even without state or federal subsidies then they could be a nice addition especially to large box stores.

Ok, but it only takes my roof to power my house and charge my car (12kw system)!

Time to start investing in candles and whale oil again.
