I saw that there is an app for android that allows parents to shut down kids phones when they don't return a call or text promptly. Ignore no more does anyone know if there is the same app for iphones.

I doubt it, probably goes against Apple app policies. There are nanny programs that let you lock down the phone from viewing porn, calls, etc.
Do you really not trust your child that much? Sheesh....

If you have your kid's Apple ID/password, you can lock the phone, remote wipe the phone, track it's location and have a message popup on the screen displaying text of your choosing through Find My iPhone.
Now that I've answered, I gotta ask. Why would you
If they're in a dangerous situation, you're literally taking away their ability to contact anyone for help.

WTF? So if he doesnt hear your text then gets hit by a drunk driver on the way home he has no way to contact you? Sounds amazingly terrible.
Just tell the kid if he doesnt respond to you he will lose his phone. Pretty simple.

An ability many of us never had or needed growing up. In fact taking away their phone just might be the kind of disciplinarian move that helps keep them out of dangerous situations. I don't think we should rag on parents trying to discipline their kids.
That being said, if you have to remote lock a phone, you've already lost the battle and given your child too much power. We didn't have cell phones growing up, but if we did my parents wouldn't have had to remote lock them to keep us from using them.

If you control their apple id, you can shut it down from icloud.

Yeah we had phone booths. I haven't seen one in 10 years.

We take our niece's phone away from her from time to time. But we physically take it. I honestly didn't even consider that the OP was doing this as a disciplinary action. Which is why I 100% agree with:

Not every situation requires 911. What if she needs a ride? Locked keys in car? Had a minor fender bender and wants to let you know?

yeah, shutting a phone down because the kid didn't respond in a timely fashion seems irrational to me.

Below quote from article.
"While the phone is locked, the child can't call anyone except for you and the police."
It doesn't brick the phone, it turns it onto a communication only device for the kid to call the parents and or police if they are in trouble. I think its a great idea.

I'm not seeing the article. Are you taking about the app that the OP was referring to?
If that's what it does, that's great, but the OP said it shuts down the phone.

The quote is from the link BACONisMEATcandy posted about the app answering the OPs request for info.

Ah my bad. Totally glossed over the link.
In that case, it's a good idea IMO.
