Tell me about these please. Are they worth a shite?

I need it for some 3'-4' tall grass at a few repo houses I want to get under control and also to use at my lease. I know I won't get the performance of a true bush hog but it still seems better than tearing up my ZTR mower. It also seems much cheaper than buying and maintaining a tractor I really don't need.

What brands are recommended?

Will you be assuming the lots are relatively clear and there is nothing to hit with your mower? That could get dangerous quick if there are debris piles you can't see.

Yea they are clear of debris but they just haven't been cut in a while. My workers have done a few with 3'+ tall grass on my commercial mowers and I don't like the wear and tear it's putting on them so I need something to knock it down to where the mowers aren't working as hard.

Like I said, I will also use it around my stands at my lease too and outside of some overgrown shrubs and under brush the areas are pretty clear as well.

A friend has the one that goes in front of his 4-wheeler and he likes it well enough. No complaints, just make sure you don't hit a big pile of rocks.

The ones I priced were like $2 or $3k... (Swisher brand I think)

you could rent a tractor and shredder quite a few times for that kind of $$$

I wonder how tall and thick the grass is he can cut with it. If I can get the stuff down to 12" then my mowers can eat through that no problem. It's just a PITA when it's 3' tall.

I have seen some around $1600 and renting makes no sense when I deal with it every week and also considering I charge the banks $500+ for each one we do at that height. My worker in SE Texas has 5 of them to do right now which is why I am looking for a solution.

It's also very hard to find a tractor to rent when you need one around here with all the construction going on. You have to be put on a waiting list and one place I called last week has all of their tractors rented out for the next 6 months.

Yeah the more I think about it when it's that tall his buddy comes and cuts it for hay.

I think those atv ones will have problems with grass that tall.

I would rent a tractor and bushhog for a day and cut it quick or hire someone else to do it.

I know you were looking to business expense the equipment and use it at the lease, but you might be out of luck.

Call the manufacturer and ask? Or buy it at academy/cabelas and if it doesn't work return it?

Meh...I hate to do that. If I could find one to rent for a day to try out that would be great but the places around here only have those walk behind Billy Goats.

Stacy rented me one of those walk behind ones that worked really well in yards. In was a PITA to hoss around though. Was called a Billy Goat brush cutter. It is perfect for going straight, but turning it sucks.

To be honest, it could've used a bigger engine, but I haven't looked up what sizes they come with. I was cutting 3-5ft tall wet grass in some yards

Yea I have rented those and promptly broke one of them because the grass was so thick. I also didn't care for them out of fear of my guys stepping on snakes or field rats. We always run tons of rats and snakes out on those tall grass cuts.

We have a DR Field and Brush Mower at the camp that we used for shooting lanes and 4 wheeler trails. It's a beast, It will cuts threw small vines and tree saplings with ease. There are not cheap. LINK
