Lets Talk NFL Salary Cap and Monster Contracts.

The cost to sign franchise QB's continues to rise. In a few years, you'll have guys like Kapernick and Wilson up for their paydays. Flacco and Ryan are making more money than Tom Brady and Drew Brees.
If the price to sign these guys continues to outpace any increases to the Cap, at what point (if any) does the game fundamentally change?
In a way, I think you're already seeing the benefits of teams drafting smart and competing with guys on their first contracts (like SEA and SF). But eventually, they'll be faced with the dilemma of signing all that talent to a second contract. Add in the fact that the college game has evolved to a point where guys are ready more than ever to step right in and start.
Do we eventually see a plateau where teams just wont pay astronomical $$ to veteran stars anymore?Could we ever see a NBA style coup where star players take less money to team up? Think well ever see loaded teams like the 80's 49ers or early 90's Cowboys where you have a team full of future HOFers on both sides of the ball?

You are going to see teams pumping money into scouting like never before. Cost controlled assets are huge.

eventually it will lead to a strike by players to get a softer cap -- or no cap at all

Thats what I see happening, although they really painted themselves into a corner with this last CBA. Its amazing how bad of a deal they negotioated for themselves.

Its amazingly short sighted on the part of the vets. Yes it benefits players signing their second contracts. But its going to screw older players in the long run if the costs keep going up.

God I hope not. I don't want the NFL to turn into the New York and Dallas show, much like the NBA is the Miami and LA show.

I find it pretty simple. It 's all about the guys in the trenches. Good offensive lines make QBs look better than they are. (Ex. Kaep) Good defensive lines make QBSs look worse than they are. (Ex. SB 48) Throw in a good running game and you can hide inefficiencies in your signal caller but it all starts with the guys up front.

Isn't the cap about to shoot up because of the ridiculous new TV contract in the next year or two?

I think it's an absolute farce to pay a starting qb that much. Okay, you're gonna get paid big, you are now going to have to play qb, wr, ol, and LB. Because we can't afford to pay them if we pay you a kings random.
I understand that the union probably won't let them take less money, and I understand getting paid what you're worth and being the highest paid bull shite.

I think will play out similarly to the NFL Draft.
In the Draft, contracts kept going up and up with each player using the previous highest contract as a negotiation point. Eventually it got to the point where it hurt teams to get a top 5 pick and have to pay an unproven talent in the NFL. I think quarterback contracts are close to their peak.
It would be interesting to see teams trading star quarterbacks after a big season (like Flacco in 2012), saving the cap hit and getting other key pieces and draft picks while the qb's trade stock peaks.

quote:Can they not keep drafting well? For every Dashon Goldson there is an Eric Reid out there somewhere. It's overall superior front offices and staffs. I thought the Niners' DL was fricked when Ian Williams went down Week 2. Glenn Dorsey then lived up to expectations.

Also, Wilson/Kaep are sitting outside of the Top 5. Those teams are lucky so long as they don't go full retard like Baltimore did with Flacco. A good but not great QB results in a more complete team.

Change it to where QBs don't count against the cap.

Wilson will get paid more than Flacco by someone.
Hence, the point of this thread.

Drew Brees is making more guaranteed money than the other three.
