It’s hard to know who is most irritated by amateur photography — the owners and chefs, the nearby diners or even the photographer’s dining companions. Emma Kate Tsai, a Houston-based editor, said her 64-year-old father drives her family crazy with the food photos he shoots with his large, cumbersome camera strapped across his chest. “It’s really irritating,” she said, “because we can’t take a bite unless he takes his photo.”
This is my dad, but not at restaurants. With the stuff he cooks on the BGE
He has to stage everything for photo op so he can post it on the BGE forum

That's hilarious, but awesome
I always hate when people use flash and stuff when I'm dining with them, but I do admit I like having photos of food. I use Foodspotting, Yelp, or Urban Spoon ALL the time to look up photos of stuff I'm considering ordering.
As much as most picture-menu restaurants are made fun of, I love seeing a photo so I know what I'm in for I usually look up the photos online for dishes at ethnic restaurants so I don't order something and then regret it.

I go to a Chinese Rest. In Houma that has a picture menu if you ask for it. Great food too.

He goes overboard
Apparently they have these online "throwdowns"
He wins quite a few of them but he admits that it's silly because the person with the best looking picture wins and it could taste like shite for all you know.
Most of his cooking is really good though. He's won a few prizes in the eggfest things IRL

privately-owned restaurants =/= the city, county or state of New York, fwiw.

I read an article about that last week in the NYT. I like the idea of not allowing it in the dining room in order to make sure other guests aren't annoying, disrupted or bothered with flashes and such and instead inviting patrons into the kitchen to take pictures of dishes as they come out.
The whole phenomena is pretty lame now that it's so ubiquitous.
