What happens when there are a few dry years and a person with less favorable stats gets in over someone that is no longer eligible?
You mean, like now? The BBWAA has elected, since 2000, these players:
Carlton Fisk
Tony Perez
Gary Carter
Kirby Puckett
Paul Molitor
Ryne Sandberg
Bruce Sutter
Jim Rice
Andre Dawson
Goose Gossage
Bert Blyleven
While failing to induct:
Mike Piazza
Lee smith
Roger Clemens
Barry Bonds
Curt Schilling
Dale Murphy
Alan Trammell
Jeff Bagwell
Mark McGwire
Tim Raines
Edgar Martinez
Craig Biggio
and hell, Jack Morris and Larry Walker (Walker is a superior player to both Rice and Dawson).
I'm sorry, but the list of guys being kept out is far better than the list of guys being put in. (I did leave out some of the no brainers who did get inducted, and I do support Ryno, just I think he's inferior to Biggio)
The system is broken NOW. Take it by position:
Piazza is better than Carter and Fisk.
McGwire, Bagwell, McGriff, hell, RAFFY are all better than Tony Perez
Biggio is better than Ryno (but it's close, this is personal opinion one)
Trammell is, ok, not as good as Larkin
There's no viable 3B on the ballot now.
Bonds, Murphy, and Raines are better than Puckett (Murph even has the same short career). Walker is better than Dawson. Hell, I think Lofton is better than Rice, but Rice is supremely overrated.
I think Edgar is a better DH than Molitor, but it's pretty close.
Clemens is better than Blyleven. Schilling is probably better with his postseason bump.
Lee Smith is better than Sutter. OK, Goose is better than Smith.

The first thing the HOF needs to do is let Rose in. It is absolutely rediculous that he is not in there by now. Half of the ball barks now have casinos advertising in them. Until Rose gets in, the baseball HOF is a joke.

Mickey Mantle did and admitted to steroid use in 1961 after missing the rest of the season as a resulting injection type infection. Hank Aaron did greenies, Perry threw spitballs and lord knows what else he put on the ball, Hank Greenberg had people stealing signs in the World Series, not to mention things like pine tar and corked bats and the fact that Ty Cobb was one of the worst examples of a human being ever, the Hall of Fame is nothing but self righteous hypocrisy that's voted on by people who never played the game aside from being picked last in little league.

That's not up to the HOF voters, infact more HOF voters would have cast votes for Rose than Bonds if they were allowed to.

Mantle got an infection because some quack used a dirty needle...IMO, the biggest problem is the writers thinking they own the game. Most of these frickers work for papers that are dying left and right. And they are the direct descendents of the same frickers who screwed ted Williams out of TWO MVP awards, simply because they didn't like him. Yes, Rose should be in, and Jim Rice was a bad bad manm in his hitting prime....

less voters, more HOF inductees voting
like the Heisman
That was my initial thought. Turn the vote over to the players, and let the greats be judged by their peers.

I think the Veterans Committee has proven that this is a truly terrible idea.
