John Travolta - Officer and A Gentleman...

He was busy getting his pilots license

Kind of ironic.

Not a turn down situation ... but the Lonesome Dove characters were originally envisioned to be

John Wayne as Woodrow Call

Jimmy Stewart as Gus McCrae

Henry Fonda as Jake Spoon

After seeing Django Unchained I wouldn't have minded seeing Will Smith in that role.

I disagree, I love Will Smith but I think Jamie Foxx was a better choice.

This

Foxx is perfect to play a slave, especially one that turns cocky at the end. Smith could have thrown around some cool dialogue...but that Will Smith was 15 years ago.

Foxx > Smith in 2012

Leone also wanted Charles Bronson to play Angel Eyes in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly instead of Lee Van Cleef but he was filming The Dirty Dozen at the time.
