$750,000 Jumbtron

quote:

Carthage's video board measures a whopping 26-feet high and 44-feet wide — some 1,200 square feet.

The town is about 7,000 and they spent that much on a freakin' video system. That's nutz

It's nice to see Texas has their priorities straight on what to waste money on.

agreed. It's not like they picked a video board over a police dept. is it excessive? Ya. But its not like they canceled school lunches to do this

nearly 40% of Allen football stadium funds were earmarked for a performing arts center, a golf driving range for the golf team, culinary arts classrooms that are used to service the schools own restaurant, and a TV studio. Attendance, advertising deals, and renting it out to the state for playoff games will cover all operating costs.

on top of that, Allen ISD only has one high school for a population of about 95,000 people. Allen High has 5,300 kids and the area is stil rapidly growing. They also have one of the highest graduation rates in the state, excellent test scores, and put the vast majority of their kids into college.

too bad most journalists have ignored all of that stuff to try and make a sanctimonious point.

Carthage is using that video board as part of their TV broadcast program and voted for it in a bond election. Also, they won state 3 years in a row recently.

Not sure about this.

Spending 60 million on a stadium is excessive, regardless of any mitigating factors.

its not $60 million on the stadium. 40% of that went to building other facilities for the school.

why do you ignore this?

No. It was a $119 million bond package voted on in 2009. 40% of that went towards other facilities, leaving 59.8 million on the stadium.

$119 Bond Package

It is a $60 million, single high school, football stadium...excessive

Does it change your opinion now knowing that the stadium was $60 million and not $36 million?

There is a state law that If they don't spend the extra revenue on their own school system they have to share it with other struggling school districts. They are flush with oil and gas money in Carthage and they have a ton of money they didn't want to share. So they spent it. No big deal to me

The robin hood law is why it makes sense for Carthage to spend the money.

Allen put a bond package to election to raise funds for their stadium, that money did not need to be spent.

No not at all. They needed a new stadium and the area is growing at a rapid pace. They can afford it and it's not like they are a shitty school district when it comes to academics.

...if the decision were limited to people who actually pay the bill (property owners), I doubt the bond issues would pass. It's easy to support something when someone else is paying the bill.

Well, they're going to have to issue bonds to pay for this thing, and probably pay it back through either a sales tax or millage increase on property taxes.

So it's $750K plus interest for a town with probably a 2-3 thousand tax paying adults.

Sounds like a dumb idea to me. Hopefully we don't here about some tiny town in TX declaring bankruptcy over a jumbotron.

ETA: Didn't see supahtigas post about Carthage being an oil/gas town. That changes things.
