Digital File Compression?

Fellow Farkers, does anyone use a program to compress files? For instance, a digital camera creates very large files for high resolution. This makes sense as a digital image is made up of pixels.

The more pixels, the higher the image resolution and the larger the file size.

However, there is a way to compress the file size without losing resolution. Does anyone know how or at least can suggest a program? It doesn't have to be freeware.

Someone suggested:
FILEminimizer
or
PunyPNG. Freeware but the 350 KB is the maximum size.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tim I have only used my basic Paint program that came loaded on my laptop. I don't know how much resolution I'm loosing but it is not enough to effect any of the images I reduce for work.

What format are you saving your images in?

Without reducing resolution, that is a huge factor in filesize. Uncompressed vs lossless compression vs lossy compression.

I save most of my art in PNG format. If I need to email something, sometimes JPEG even though I know the resolution degrades something terrible.

I wanted to email some photos from a digital camera without losing resolution. I picked up that FILEminizer. It works pretty well. Compresses large JPEG's. There's no visible resolution loss but however the pixel resolution is cut by over half. The file sizes were reduced by 90%.

I save all my stuff lossless as well. You can't go back from lossy.

Is the filesize via email the issue? If so, you can always use cloud storage for them to get the files. I think there are several free/trial ones that would work. I just host them on my own web and email the link when filesize via email is an issue.

Is cloud storage like an FTP site?

I have toyed with the idea of getting my own domain for artwork but haven't yet. Now I use a premium Photobucket account.

I believe Deviant Art trademarks posted work so others can steal it (as easily anyway).

Same basic concept but all web interface. You don't have to know FTP or use a FTP client to up/down files.

A buddy of mine uses ADrive. You can do password protected shares of files with others. It might work perfect for you.

Top free cloud storage

From 2-25GB, most limit you on filesize (somewhere near 25MB-50MB, though, which should be big enough for any single image)

I've never heard of A-Drive before Rattlehead mentioned it, but it looks like you get 50GB free there.

...and there's no reason you can't/shouldn't sign up for all of them
