well depends on what you are most into, as the likelihood that he will enjoy it too one day.

My family has a long history of playing guitars, my grandfather, father, me......so I bought a "baby martin" acoustic guitar when my son was born. I gave it to him when he turned 8. He's 15 now and better on guitar than anyone in the family.

As for guns, my theory is the best gun is one that is passed down. So I don't think I'b buy a gun specifically for him one day, unless you have anything missing from your collection that you need to add... A nice deer rifle that you pass down one day...saying I bought this the day you were born! Its mine and now is yours.

ETA - nice pocket knife a good idea too.
