One day at a time….. sometimes it’s one minute at a time. Get a sponsor and stay in touch with them ALL the time…… good luck… GO to meetings.

How much were you using/drinking? Quitting cold turkey if you were drinking heavily could be dangerous and you should be monitored by a medical professional in detox.

While I agree. Sometimes it’s just about will power and changing habits and hobbies. But HE HAS to want to do it for himself and nobody else……. I’ve been there and done that.

Good luck. Thinking about toeing the line myself. Just drink beer at night but too much of it. Only get bombed every once in a while but pay for it the next two days. Joints hurt so can't workout, only walk my dogs a few miles is about it. All my hobbies are drink friendly, golf, fishing, cooking, you know the deal. Keep the faith.

In terms of drinking, if I went out there wasn’t a night I wouldn’t throw back 6-7 drinks, ungodly amounts of shots, and that doesn’t include beer. Coke was about a G everytime we went out if not more, learning to get away from the crowd is going to be the toughest part of it I already can tell

Just know that you are more likely to get addicted to something else so be vigilant. Those pathways are there, and you know how to use outward influences to manipulate inward emotions. It may be exercise or work, or something more nefarious like porn, gambling…

Speaking from experience of knowing tons of people who have been successful and unsuccessful.

Any friends who use or abuse, they’ve got to be cut out. If you run with your addict crowd you’ll keep being an addict. They will keep dragging you down.

Get a good support system if people you can hang out with that aren’t in that lifestyle.

Get in an accountability program.

Don’t give up if you have a hick up.

I hope you read this post! No matter where you go you will find what you're looking for. Changing people places and things helps but the only way you will remain clean is if you really really want it. If you get clean and start wanting to have a beer and relax don't! Let me repeat that! Do not even take one drink! One is too many and a thousand isn't enough. It'll lead to two and I promise you will be doing your DOC within hours. I've hit some pretty low points and while sober it disgusts me to think about using but if I ever have a drink it's all I think about! It is a disease and it is progressive. Even if you remain abstinent for months or years if you go back out it will be worse than before. Go to meetings! That's cheesy shite they say in meetings is the FACTS! RELAPSE is part of recovery! I've met thousands of addicts! And I can count on ONE hand how many have never RELAPSED! Key is get back up brush it off and keep trying to get better!if someone tells you that you are just morally weak tell them to kick rocks! Being an addict is something that I still have a hard time believing I made a spiritual contract to endure! Your beliefs may differ but you must BELIEVE there is a power greater than you and it can change you! If not you will give up! Hopefully you didn't persue addiction as hard as many do because it never gets easier! If you need someone to talk to let me know! I'll get you my number and try to help if I can! Good luck friend! You're not alone!

Corrected grammar

That doesn’t have to be true. If some of the folks in the crowd you hung out with are real friends they’ll support you regardless of the surroundings. If they were only friends because you shared a common addiction, then yeah stay away. While most will tell you to stay away from everything familiar, for me that wasn’t going to work. I knew if I was by myself I’d have just fallen off the wagon eventually.

FWIW I am 10,820 days sober and there are still days I miss it. I often joke when I get to that 30 year mark (later this year) am going back to my old ways.

Good luck to you! It will be one of the hardest things you will go through but will give you a sense of peace once you get through it. It’s important to get down to the bottom of what issues you are trying to ignore. Once you figure out why you cover it up with drugs/ alcohol, you can then address the things you are avoiding and feeling.

For me there was a difference between “I need to quit” and “I want to quit.”
The i need to quit was I didn’t really want to but I should. The I want to quit was I really do want to stop. Two times before I was in the I need to quit mode and the longest I lasted was 48 days.
When I wanted to quit it’s been 5 years now and am feeling good.
