What exactly does the vaccine do
It reduces the death rate by about 85%

All 4 of us contracted it this week. All of us have different symptoms. The wife and I are going for the antibodies in the morning. Feels like the flu, a cold, and sinuses all at once
Mine got way worse after day 7. I felt awful week 1, god awful week 2 and then out of nowhere I woke up with energy and by the next day all i had left was sinus/congestion that lasted about 3 more days.

This delta variant has become everything that original covid was feared to be,
Not it hasn't. It is apparently more contagious yet simultaneously far less fatal.

I had my first symptoms today. Was exposed Thursday.
Headache, low grade fever, head congestion from hell. No breathing issues. Can still taste and smell. Overall feel like a turd sandwich, but completely manageable. Interesting to see how it progresses.
On a Z-pack, mucinex, zinc, ibuprofen, and vitamin d. Chugging water like it’s going out of style.
Fwiw I’m 31 and in above average shape.

Well, it depends on which death rate your talking about. The death rate from covid? Or the death rate of generally being alive? And it depends on over what period of time.
But, in about 180,000 people in randomized clinical peer reviewed studies, over a 6 mont period;
About 1% of the people who got placebo died. And about .15% of the people who got the vaccine died.
So it reduced the general rate of death by about 85%. That's an amalgamation of multiple studies over multiple vaccines.
But it's statistical proof across multiple studies that vaccines prevent death.

Yeah I had some bad coughing fits the entire time - took about 2 1/2 weeks before the cough went away from the time I got sick. Week 2 was absolutely miserable. The first week I had no issues with nausea and out of nowhere it hit me like and truck and Zofran had no effect on the nausea. That was by the worst thing for me. I didn't lose taste or smell but everything tasted funny.
Believe it or not, Dramamine was a life saver for me.

I think his point is that the death rate is exceptionally low overall.
So while reducing the rate of death by 85% is a good thing, 85% of a very small number is a very very small number.

For example. If you told me it went from 1 in a trillion to .15 in a trillion, I wouldn't give 2 fricks(extreme example for the purposes of illustration)
quote:This is an odd number. Do you mean died if they got COVID, or died at all?
About 1% of the people who got placebo died. And about .15% of the people who got the vaccine died.
quote:Well, I never argued differently. But, you still didn't really answer the question. Moreover, a general answer to the question is also somewhat useless because the risk of death for a 70 year old is exponentially higher than for a 30 year old. Which is why I would probably recommend a 70 year old get the vaccine. The difference (from what to what) is far larger.

Winner winner
quote:Yup. Which is why running around saying "by XXX percent" is almost always an intentionally misleading stat

I don't see the point of arguing constantly over the vaccination. It's like buying a gun, if you want one buy one. If you don't like guns, don't buy one. Pretty simple.

Yep. Agreed.

Any MDs that can justify or deny my opinion on this, but did we set ourselves up for more deadly strands of CoVId with lockdowns? My thinking is we could have built up natural immunity with weaker variants and no be as vulnerable to the mutated variants as they got stronger.

I'm going to get crucified for saying this, but I believe that it'll get better once everyone has been exposed to it and gotten the anti-bodies in their systems. Whether that by having it or by getting vaxxed to be exposed to it.
