Reports are YES that they did but homes floated away, the island is reportedly cut in half and hwy 1 is washed out.

I’d bet more people die in the aftermath killing each other in the looting and survival then the storm actually gets.

Looks like a couple pictures on the outdoor board from hurricane hole area and I’m actually surprised that so many structures are still standing.

You do realize the eye of Katrina was more than double the size of Ida? Maybe I should say the hurricane force winds reached out farther from the center.

It is amazing that hours of sustained 100+ winds and being under 6 feet of water that much more viewable damage didn't occur.

The whole thing is just a big sand bar anyway, isn't it?

I think it's been established that it usually takes double digit surge height (feet) to provide the force and buyouancy to lift buildings off the foundations. Katrina was like 16 feet if I recall?
They got lucky yesterday.

Yep, just like Galveston and Dauphin Island. Then again, all islands on the gulf coast are sandbars of varying sizes. The Florida Keys are pretty much the same thing with a limestone base.

More people die after a hurricane than during, but deaths are typically from accidents related to clean up and rebuilding.

That is not nearly as bad as I figured damage would be based on the live cams & wind reports. Grand Isle will rebuild & be fine once again.

Considering what we saw on the cam, that's honestly way better off than I expected.
