Wait, are you actually arguing against a zipper merge being more effective than getting in a long line?

It’s pretty basic, and you should be able to understand it.

Tigergrad I love a good zipper merge. Here's the aspect of this conversation that makes all the difference in the world:

How many cars are in each lane.?

If there are 20 cars in each lane and we all alternate until compressed into one lane that is perfect.

If there are 20 cars in the left lane and none in the right, because everyone knows the right lane is ending, and someone comes flying down the right lane past the entire line of traffic who got in line in the order they arrived... then when he merges at the last second in the front its not zipper merging its simply skipping the line.

When I think of zipper merging I think of a huge volume of cars trying to get out of a parking lot, an on ramp in heavy traffic, or coming to a blocked lane on the interstate.

On the other hand, if there is a line of cars in a particular lane for any completely obvious reason, and someone who should simply get in the back of the line chooses to drive past everyone and squeeze in at the front, they are about to be hated by a whole lot of people.

Its all about arrival time. Did you get to a merge point at the same time or did you arrive 10 minutes after the line and choose to pass 100 cars to jump them all?

If you show up to a line of 100 cars in the left lane, from behind them, you become car 101, not ride the open lane to the front and become car 2.

**I also have a real problem with the cars that let these a-holes merge at the front of the line. Block them out!
