Claiming 1908 would put LSU football into the same number of national championships as programs such as Nebraska and Miami. The great Doc Fenton was also retroactively given the Heisman that year. The 1908 team out scored its opponents 442-11. I see there being zero disadvantages to claiming the 1908 title. The 1908 team should be respected with the recognition they deserve... the NCAA even claims us as winning that year! There is even a blank placard next to the 2019 placard waiting to be engraved. I’ve emailed Woodward around 5 times now but no response.

I know this is stupid, but if anybody knows Woodward or has mutual friends with him please push it! Geaux Tigers!

2019 team would beat the brakes off the 1908 team

ETA: Before anyone gets pissy, that was a joke

I can imagine 100 years from now LSU fans (if football still exists)..not appreciating the LSU teams of the early 2000’s..especially the 2019 team. So I’m all for it.

I should edit by saying I don’t think they’re the greatest..just that they deserve recognition

I remember attending those games with my dad and we ran roughshod over every opponent.

Reading the wikipedia page for that team is hysterical.

Later in the half, Auburn's T. C. Locke blocked an LSU punt which was recovered by Fenton behind his own goal for a safety.[13] According to one source, Fenton was knocked unconscious by a spectator's cane as he tried to get out of the end zone. LSU made the second score using conventional football.

We ain't Bama. We don't need to go around claiming mythicals from more than 100 years ago.

As an aside, my great uncle worked for Doc Fenton in the Department of Revenue.

Yeah I remember that game vs Sewanee. I went to the union and got a club sandwich for 7 cents and stared at this good looking chicks ankles for like and hour. Huey Long was handing out Beat Sewanee stickers. Awesome day.

On the NCAA's official site, they have LSU and Penn as national champions for 1908. Has LSU ever explained why they don't claim that one? Why wouldn't they? The NCAA is like "Hey ya'll were champions in 1908" and LSU is like, "Nah we're good on that." Makes no sense. What is the cutoff year for when championships started to count? When did it begin to matter? People say it was a mythical championship but weren't all the championships mythical until the Bowl Coalition and Bowl Alliance days?

Michigan claims 11 national championships. Of those 11, only one came after 1948. They claim 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1918, etc. Should they only claim 1997 because people are alive to remember it?

You cant claim an old championship after a 6-6 season or you look like Ole miss living in the past. The time to do it was when we were updating all the banners after 2019.

I absolutely think we should claim 1908. Always have. The NCAA recognizes us. If we claim to have played football back then, and we do, then we should claim that National Championship.

We should have 5 national titles.

I DVR'd every game that season.
Went to 3 games in person.
We were unstoppable.

Grantland Rice accused the headcoach of bringing down ringers from PA with him, including the team's superstar doc fenton and best lineman, Mike lally. Tulane refused to play us. The media wouldn't award us the siaa title because of this. We were later cleared by the conference but some of those players were ringers.
