re: Is there a law mandating a drawbridge opens every 30min?

This isn't right.
"On signal" means when a boat hails them to open (or is obviously waiting for them to open). They open on the half hour and on the hour, except during rush hour, but only if a boat is waiting.

I stand corrected, as law they don't open regardless. That being said I have seen it open with no boat needing to pass. I was in the river at the time so I am certain no boat was waiting.

I wonder if that toll bridge will ever get built?

Even so, every 30 minutes "on signal" is still absurd considering its a standing 30 minutes (top/bottom of the hours) and the bridge is typically opened almost 10 minutes at a time.

Houma Navigation Canal Bridge. That bridge never stops.

One of my customers is one of the draw bridge operators. I give her shite all the time for fn up our commute but I can guarantee she only opens it every 30 minutes if boats are actually waiting there to pass.

This just in, the bridge was there before you moved. You should move away.

Agreed, I've always hated that with that bridge because there are only 3 ways across that damn river.
From FB Page of proposed new bridge....
LINK
Also... from City of Mandeville FB Page:
Although it states "Mandeville Traffic Summit", it also includes reps from the surrounding areas...

Are there not blackout periods for opening the bridge?
Posted on 6/10/21 at 10:48 am to GREENHEAD22
always wondered about the person operating the bridge on the causeway. seems like a pretty boring job

Bridges follow US Coast Guard law and water has the right of way over tracks and roads. Boats do not have breaks. Roads received permission to cross waterways because the waterways were there first. Don't like it, tough. Melt.

Drawbridges seem like architectural short sightedness. The long term costs of maintenance, operation, etc have to exceed the long term convenience of just building a slightly more elevated permanent structure.
Hwy 11 across the lake has been closed for like 3-4 years for them to repair the draw bridges. They could have torn it down and built a new elevated bridge in less time.

quote:The situation seems to have gotten so bad that it now dwarfs/overwhelms/neutralizes anything the USCG, DOTD, and Parish Planners can throw at it, including tweaking the bridge schedule and widening HWY22. HWY 22 always winds up at the little 2-lane bridge in Madisonville. This has been going on for literally 25 years (search archives from the TP around 1996 forward). Conventional thinking is not your friend...

That quaint little bridge in that charming little village has way too much power.
