I use a magnet as well.

I've purchased one from Costco that has been great. Way better than the Zircon. No unnecessary drill holes yet.

I started at the Zircon area. Began at the low end ...moved toward the high end and stopped in the middle.

Had to use it to find nails and staples during my Wind Mitigation inspections in Florida. Toughest part was marking sheathing nails in rafters when it was 98 outside and 96% humidity. You carry towels because you leave behind a gallon of sweat inside every attic you go into.

It never missed a nail or staple. You mark each location and estimated whether or not the roofer had an off day that afternoon.
