The Better question is why the hell did LSU hire Mike Archer when they could have had Steve Spurrier!

Simply put, they let the inmates run the asylum. Players, led by Tommy Hodson, appeared before a BOS meeting and “demanded” Archer be hired. After 1 10-win season, things went south in a hurry.

Seemed easy, at the time.

Mike Archer was the continuation of Bill Arnsparger's program. He ran the defense under Bill, he was young and upcoming, ready to take over. Had an elite QB and offense at the time, with Hodson etc.

Spurrier and Sullivan had basically the same appeal; former SEC Heisman winners. I imagine their potential was to "bring the offense"... we didn't seem to need that.
Hindsight is always 20/20.

Curley was a complete disaster, he brought an underdog mentality here IMO. Always seemed to talk like if we could beat Auburn (for example), it would be the greatest thing ever for LSU. No offense, but beating Auburn shouldn't seem miraculous for LSU. We should never consider ourselves a lesser program than anyone else in the SEC, certainly anyone not named Bama. That shite worked at Southern Miss, it wouldn't here. You come out and expect to win, not hope you can play well enough to stay close.

Dinardo was a decent choice, he quickly made a point of emphasizing that LSU could play with anyone. Funny, because he made his mark by making Vandy the scrappy underdog. But he knew the difference in programs.

Hiring Archer was a mistake that LSU paid for....for about 13 years until Saban fell into our lap.

Originally Saban was not on the radar. Michigan State was happy with him and he was starting to gain traction there. He (Saban) took the initiative
