I tried out a reel mower for a full season. The cut is far superior to a rotary. I loved the look, but it wasn't worth it for me. Reel mowers are much narrower, so it takes longer to cut a yard. and as others have mentioned, you better not have any trees at all in your cutting area. The mower will get hung up, even on the tiniest twig. Also, I noticed it misses grass blades fairly often. My OCD will not allow missed spots, so I tended to take way too long to cut my quarter-acre as I went over the missed spots
But if you just have a small volleyball court away from any trees, the reel mower will be perfect for that
