Yep, and that's because drinking has become so taboo that people use the quickest way to get fricked up.

Also has contributed to the normalization of harder drugs. I and a lot of other guys from back in the day were astounded at the current casual use of illegal drugs. In our world anything more than weed was not only taboo but sneered at as only for lowlifes, hippies and other vermin. And anyway you could get as fricked up as you wanted to at the house on beer your dues were already paying for, under the semi watchful eye of older, wiser guys who kept things from getting completely out of hand. Now you go to somebody's apartment and drink yourself into a coma on everclear or OD on pain pills.

Looking at the pictures, he does look like an innocent kid. Probably didn’t have much drinking experience. Doubt he was like Ben Wynn back in the day, taking GHB on pledge night.

Yet the vast majority of doctors and lawyers do cocaine/illegal drugs like its a way of life.

Did you ever sneer at the doctors and lawyers?

Exactly.

I told my pledge trainers to eat shite if they pushed me too far or I couldnt drink anymore. Our pledge trainers knew I wasn't scared to beat their asses. At the end of the day you are responsible for your decisions.

I don’t think you understand the words “vast” and “majority”. Do you really think over 50% of doctors do cocaine like it’s a way of life?

When I went to LSU the frats were basically a status symbol of the haves and the have nots. It was basically a "Look at me, my family has money."

No Greek here, but I speak daily to a group of guys, 15 years later, from a fraternity. If you’re not a spaz, you can have friends without paying them.

Try not being a spaz.

I was In a fraternity and honestly it was a great experience.

The problem is drinking is part of it and it’s not just hazing but part of the appeal.

But we’re dealing with 18-22 year old
Kids who read to be fricking morons and too often don’t know when enough is enough.

Making or even letting a kid drink a handle of whisky by 11 o’clock when he gets there at 9?

shite, copious Natty cans and ramen noodle wrappers say differently. Half the time there’s a couple guys missing several articles of clothing running around in slide sandals (if shoes at all) trying to bum smigs. The frats I’ve seen are fricking Syria.

When I was in college, fraternity fees/meal plan/housing was within a few hundred bucks or so of living in the dorms with a meal plan. Is it that much more expensive now?

I actually SAVED money by joining a frat. My parents told me in advance they would pay for tuition and books but everything else was on me so I had to work and save for college.

Room & Board (we had a full time cook who made 3 meals a day) at my fraternity house was $880 a semester and dues were I think $600 a year, plus maybe some other fees. I lived in the fraternity house during the summer too and summer rent was $750 for the whole summer, but had to buy my own food during the summer. So all of my living expenses and entertainment for the entire year were only $4000.

Apartments were I went to college were expensive - $1200 for a 2br (so $600 a month with a roommate plus another $100 for split utilities), plus I would have paid $200 for groceries and probably another $200 for alcohol and social life that wasn't at my doorstep. And dorm rooms and the college meal plan were a lot more expensive than living off campus.

So that's $13,000 a year living off campus or $18,000 a year living in the dorm versus $4000 for joining a fraternity. That's a HUGE saving for someone paying their own way or taking out student loans. Of course you're living in a shithole mansion with 30 drunken rednecks, so that opens up a whole 'nother can of worms.

Did you hate the 8+ service projects we did each year?

Did you hate the gifts we took to the children's home at Christmas?

How about the fundraisers where 100% of the funds went to charitable organizations?

You don’t have to defend them to me now. As I’ve gotten older, I now see the benefit of people that were members of one. My hate was irrational and over my high school sweetheart who’s best friend was in a sorority and my GF wasn’t. The best friend was always trying to get her to go to parties that of course I couldn’t go to and I was like frick no frick no. My GF never went to any of them so don’t come back with ‘oh, so a frat star fricked your gf.’ No, one didn’t but the threat was there so I fricking despised them.

If I had to guess, they told the pledge class to finish the handle. Poor kid probably wanted to impress people so he decided to drink the majority of it. I can’t imagine they expected each kid to finish a handle of jack (especially since no other kids had alcohol poisoning).
