Let's say Jones transfers in, what do we do with the 25th spot?

Jones would be our 24th spot in this years class.
What are some potential options for transfers for the 25th spot?
CB, TE, or OL would make sense, or do you just shop around and get the best player available no matter position? Or would we just go with a lower level project player out of HS that's still available?
No matter how it shakes out this is a stellar class

any update on Toto'to sp** from Tennessee?
Posted on 2/10/21 at 11:32 am to cajuntiger1010
O already said one would likely be used on LB and next one would be best available player depending on need
Plus you don't know who could end up in portal once school ends in May

Take a TE if the staff sees one they believe will make an impact here, or an OL that could be good enough to start next year. The latter is unlikely because anyone that good will want to start THIS year snd all of our starters return. The staff isn’t going to give away someone’s job like that.
If neither of those happens, hold the spot for an EE next year. Then we can take a transfer OL if needed without losing one of our 25 for the year. We could have 0-2 OL starters returning in 2022, so a guy who can step right in could be more important than any other need we have today.

Unless the SEC alters it current rules, he would have to sit a year here or at any other SEC school. The SEC isn’t going to consider changing rules until the NCAA decides on its one-time waiver policies going forward. They were supposed to have released that last month and we are already 1/3 of the way through February with no word. Who knows how long it will be before this all plays out.
If either of the UT guys want to commit to a new program soon, it likely won’t be another SEC school. Unless the waiver situation is resolved soon, I doubt we will be in it for either of them.

I saw yesterday that an auburn player and a state player both transferred to the gators and are immediately eligible.

Since suddenly it seems that we CAN sign over 25....seeing as how Bama has done it 3 years in a row at least...
then unless we find a transfer we are eligible to take and hes better than what we have (aka Mike Jones) I say we hold it over to a loaded 22 class

It's hard to see an IMPACT OL player who is looking to start immediately transferring to LSU with LSU returning all 5 OL from last year (unless O does what he did with Burrow and essentially promises the transfer the starting job ahead of someone already on the roster...even if that promise isn't announced publicly)
TE is probably the spot where a transfer could most likely come in and start immediately. But I wouldn't take a guy who wasn't very good just to fill a need.
If there is a good underclassman out there at any position who is willing to start behind others on the depth chart and try to fight for playing time, then you consider it. Otherwise, just hold the scholarship over for next year.

It is assumed (right now) that rule will pass in March/April. If/when it does, the rationale supporting doing so will be unexpected issues created by the "pandemic". With that at the backdrop, there is NO WAY the SEC wouldn't also allow in-conference transfer waivers. They may not WANT to do it. But the league would face a ton of negative PR if they didn't.

Are they grad transfers? They don’t fall under the current rule that Herb Vincent reminded everyone about when Gilbert transferred. They probably won’t fall under any changes after the one-time waiver situation is resolved, either.

I don’t think so this year. The NCAA is supposed to be setting the permanent rules for going forward, not more exceptions for dealing with the pandemic. The SEC needs to do the same. They need to set a policy that doesn’t allow ANY in-conference waivers, no matter what, from now on. They don’t need to care what people think. No more COVID excuses.
If they don’t, I think they know that the Gilbert shitshow will be the tip of the iceberg. Situations like that will play out all over the fricking conference, every year.
