There's more to playing TE than catching the ball. TE is a tough position to compare, as some are blocking TE's and others are catching TE's. Occasionally you get one who can do both. It also depends greatly on how the TE is used in the offense.

Dickson may very well become the all-time leader in receiving among LSU TE's, but that doesn't necessarily make him the best TE.

Billy Truax has to be near the top.

Then I second my original thought. If he puts up 400 yds and 5 scores this year then I have him right up at #1. His performance in the National Title game was money, I think in my mind that plays a huge part.

Only time will tell my friends. We have to wait and see what happens. I think he has the talent and to end up as the best though.

That'd be my choice too. Great blocker and great pair of hands.

Often overlooked was a clutch 4th down catch of an underthrown pass by Amadee he made against Ole Miss in 61 on the Tiger's only touchdown drive of the night.

Had a decent pro career too.

I think he has had some of the best catches for a tight end at LSU. He definitely is mr reliable when catching. He still has some ground to make up to get those stats in line with the other greats. I think he'll be #1 by the time he is done at LSU.

I would hope that those numbers would not put Dickson at the top of the LSU TE list. He might wind up being, but right now, all he's had is 1 good year.

yeah, this argument seems quite a bit premature...

he has been a solid contributer to the team so far but I'm not sure I would even place him in the top 10...yet....but he certainly has "all the tools" to be up there by the time he's done

Agreed, he has to emulate last season's stats or better them to be in the ballgame. Really though, he's not far off from Royal or Lafleur (from what I could find), so it really won't take much. It's not like LSU has had a freak pass catching TE the likes of Newsome, K2, Shockey, etc

Billy Truax was a beast but I don't recall that he had great hands. He was more like the HULK. I agree that Dickson may be the best receiving tight end we've had.

Talent wise, Robert Royal gets the nod. Le Fleur was very, very good and so was Savoie, but they weren't versatile and they also played in a more pro-style offense as opposed to that '01 wide open playbook.

Kinchen was very solid at TE. LSU's only loss in '87 to Bama was because he and Hodson were both out.

Willie Williams, Ronnie Haliburton, and David Jones also were good TE's...all three misused.

Brian was a great TE; wasn't nearly as electrifying as his brother. Had Todd played on a team that was worth a damn, he would go down as one of the three best WR's in school history. He lettered in '89-91. Those three years were just plain dark.

* Tidbit: KInchen caught what would have been a game winning bomb in the '90 game at Vandy, but he was called for offensive pass interference. Vandy held on to win and we won 5 games that season. That's a very underrated play because it might have spared us less of the following dark ages. Archer might have held on to his job one more year and we would never have seen Hallman. LSU goes 6-5 anmd not 5-6 and maybe makes the Indy or Peach Bowl and maybe we land a few more recruits. Oh well...it's all worked out. I just know that Kinchen caught that ball clean as hell and why would a ref make that call in that situation?
