My best friend and former LSU basketball player, Duane DeArmond, has been diagnosed with cancer. For those of you that aren't aware, he played for the tigers from 1976-1980 back in the glory days with Rudy Macklin, Greg Cook, Jordy Hultberg, and the rest of the gang. He carried the nickname of Disco D. His beautiful wife Tory called me this past weekend to inform me of the bad news.

Big D now resides in Houston, TX. He has two sons Blake (21 yrs old) and Brandt who is a senior this year and a star receiver on his high school football team. Both of his sons are extremely well mannered and courteous young men who love their father dearly.

Duane is in a local Houston hospital now and is scheduled to be moved to MD Anderson tomorrow Tuesday 8-12-08. He is in tremendous pain. The cancer is mainly in one of his kidneys and has spread to his liver and lungs.

Prayer is a powerful thing. Please remember big D in your prayers if at all possible. Right now he needs all that we can give. He remains one of the biggest tiger fans of all time, and needs our help.

Edited 9-19 for update. People have been asking for updates about Duane.
Please see end of thread.

Duane played for RHS (Redemptorist High S.) in 1975 when my brother played for CHS (not Catholic
H.S. but Central H.S.) and Duane was a pioneer. He wasn't great but was so big and "not clumsy" that he would score at will. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Big D, even though I've never rooted for RHS. Hang tough.

Very sorry to hear about Duane...I know folks that hung with him back in the day, and I dealt with him some when he worked at Cort..Wasn't he also nicknamed "Big Bird"?

Good luck to him and his family during this trying time. I give chemotherapy and I can tell you, we have definitely come a long way. Stay positive and God bless.

Here's an update, folks.

I just spoke with Duane's son Blake. Duane is now resting at home and wasn't able to get into MD Anderson yet. The way I understand it, he supposedly is in too good of health.

Maybe someone with more knowledge than me about MD Anderson can explain.

Anyway, I was told that Duane is actually feeling better today, so I have to believe that the prayers are working. I have asked Blake to tell Duane to call me if he feels up to it. Hopefully he will, and then I will have even more updates soon.

Also, he was able to get to a computer and read this entire thread, so PLEASE KEEP THE REPLIES COMING!

Hang in there big D. We're all pulling for you.
