Recall Roger fired Rick for the Wall, had to hire him back to be a touring musician and he wasn't a member of the band again until David brought him back after Roger left.

Pink Floyd was at their best when Roger collaborated with David and Rick was free to be the soul of the band. Rick, of course, had his own demons in the late 70s that complicated things greatly.

Rick was going through a divorce during the recording of The Wall. He was not contributing much to the band, understandably so. However he still wanted an equal cut of production royalties. This pissed Roger off, and was a big reason why he was fired.

While The Wall is magnificent, I agree Pink Floyd was their best when they all worked together.
