Acquaintances invented self checkout. One guy was bat shite crazy and insisted it worked. Other guy was funny as hell and freely admitted it needed improvement.
When I go use self checkout and it messes up I blame dave (crazy guy)
Another guy I know invented some kind of digital imaging piece for sonograms and is still inventing.
Another invented the focus piece on the chemo machine.
All great people

Wiki says David Humble invented the machines. But I heard a Planet Money episode with Dr. Howard Schneider, who is often credited for inventing the process. The first ones were used in a Price Chopper in Clifton Park, New York in 1992.
Howard struggled with it and sold the company for just enough to buy a house and car. Years later the company sold for $30 million.
