Pretty sure my Grandpa did, remember him saying nerves were burning
I’ve never had it but both my Grandparents said it was painful

When children get chickenpox, it causes the adults around them to reactivate the antibodies and prevents shingles outbreaks. Too bad kids don't get the chickenpox anymore.

DW had a bad case of it. He had to take something for the nerve pain. I think neurontin.

Yes.
Pain, no skin change at all for like a week.
Thought it was rotator cuff issue.
About 7 days in rash showed up. Got put on Valtrex antiviral. Seemed to work wonders. I didn't have horrible pain like I have heard from others.

I had it around my waist. Couldn't wear jeans or a belt for almost 2 months. Was pretty miserable.

I had them in my 20's which is odd.
Woke up with what looked like poison ivy on my side, it hurt like heck.
Seems like we just let it run it's course with pain Rx.
Mine followed a rib on my right side
I take a vaccine every 10 years to prevent them now

Had it after I took the bar exam. It was the “belt” rash. It sucks and now I have Zovirax on my prescription profile.

My husband's story.
His Mother had been more nasty than usual-screaming insulting wishing all sorts of horrible things on him. More than usual.
The next day there were four small itching bumps on his lower back, left hand side. He thought it might have been poison ivy. I had known a lot of men in the oil industry who had come down with shingles in severe stress times. We returned to New Orleans that day, and I got him to see a Dr. at Ochsner less than three days after her verbal assault. The Doctor asked what happened, he wasn't sure what to say. I said: verbal assault and horrible words from his Mother. Doctor said, after looking at the bumps. Yes, shingles.
I got him treated fast enough that it didn't get debilitating.
No one sobbed at her funeral.

A friend of mine had it on his face and it caused half his face to lose feeling. It looked like he had a stroke or something (half his face drooped), for months. I felt so bad for him. I think he fully recovered though, thankfully, and his face is back to normal.

I noticed a small rash with blister-like bumps starting to develop on my abdomen between by chest and belly button. It itched a little, but no pain at all. I didn't think much of it until, out of sheer coincidence, I mentioned something about it to a friend who had recently had shingles. He said that's what it looked like and told me to go to the doc right away to start the medicine. If not for that encounter I probably would not have gone to the doc until much later as I didn't realize it could be shingles.
I started taking the medicine about 2-3 days after the rash appeared. The rash never really spread, nor was it (or my body) ever painful. It was just an annoyance that lasted about 7-10 with a slight discoloration that took about 2 months to fully go away.
Point being, if you haven't already, get the medicine ASAP!

My Dad had it with a rash on his side and back, but it wasn't a bad case -- no pain until the blisters showed up. He had had the Shingles shot and the doctor said that probably mitigated the seriousness of the outbreak. Don't think they'll give you a Shingles shot unless you're over 50. He also had chicken pox 3 times which is odd.
Know a guy that had a bad case on the soles of his feet, and he was pretty miserable.

Pain - Yes
My Father in law just got over this, I thought he was gonna die. His whole right half of his body hurt from the waist up and locked up like he had had a stroke or something like that. THe pain was both before and after the rash went away. It whipped him for at least two solid months. Sat in the recliner all day and had to sleep there.
After seeing that, I'm gonna get the vaccine.

Well shingles is a strain of the herpes virus and it lies dormant for a long time and can be triggered by many things. Stress, excessive sunlight, certain foods, alcohol, you name it. It travels on nerve pathways and with most Herpes Simplex Virus outbreaks there is a "prodrom" phase where the rash is not yet visible but the pain has started. This is a precursor to an outbreak and a course of Valtrex would be wise and do it ASAP because time is of the essence.

My right eyebrow started to swell and was a little sore. I thought it was maybe a massive zit so I tried to pop it, this obviously didnt work and hurt like hell. The next morning it was kind of scaly and had swollen more so I went to the urgent care and got diagnosed with Shingles at the tender age of 21. Probably lasted all of two weeks after I got on some meds.

Yes, it was awful. It started under my armpit so I initially thought it was a rash caused by recently switching deodorants. Since I thought it would just go away I waited way too long to do anything about it and it spread around my chest and back.
It was extremely painful to the point that just the air coming from vents hurt. Showers had to be short and lukewarm b/c any kind of heat felt like I was on fire but a cold shower stung like I'd jumped into an icy river. Even my softest shirts felt itchy.
I had to take pain pills and meds for at least a month to clear it up and even though I was on a bunch of vicodin it was still painful. If you think you have it go get checked out now before it gets bad. If you don't have it but are old enough to get the vaccine go get it now. You don't want to let it get out of control.

My wife had skin pain on her stomach to the point we almost had surgery. Her doctor did a test and she was positive for shingles. There were no visible signs. A couple rounds of medicine later and the pain went away.

As said, the pain showed first. Shoulder blade area and a catch in my breath. That was on a Monday. Looked like pimples on Friday and it hurt to take a deep breath. Went Saturday AM and got a shot. Stress caused it. I was late 20's. Hurt for about 3-4 weeks after but not pain medicine hurt.
