Hey guys, I’m embarrassed to say this but I’m having trouble with my rifle. It’s a browning x bolt and 10 years or so ago I put a Nikon buck master on it. I can not get the gun to group well. I’ve double checked everything with a torque wrench and my gunsmith went through the gun. Any of y’all having trouble with x bolts?

If you had a real gunsmith look it over, then it’s gotta be you or the ammo.

May seem like a dumb question but have you put copper solvent through the barrel yet? Make sure the rifling is clean or you are shooting knuckle bullets and you will not group.

It’s probably your scope. Also Recheck your mounts.

Old man that helped me get all my guns right, just shook his head when I brought my Browning, said they give him more trouble than any other, never did get a good group out of it... good luck

The gunsmith couldn't give you an answer? I would try a different scope and mounts.

What kind of grouping are we taking? What caliber?

Not sure if that gun is capable of 1” groups. 2-3” may be its best. 100yd groups is what I’m talking about.

Also, how many different types of ammo have you tried?
What grain weight of the bullets are your shooting and what’s the barrel twist? There is a chance you are shooting too light or too heavy a bullet for the twist rate of the barrel.

I’m getting 2-3” groups at 100 yards. I’m also putting the gun in a lead sled so I know it’s not me. I know the mounts are tight but I get wild shots that are 4” off every 5 rounds or so. I am thinking I have a barrel problem at this point. I’ve cleaned the gun way more than I would ever clean a gun and cannot get it to be consistent.

I had a rifle that did that once, turned out it was the mounts. Stayed dead on then one would fly. Sent the barrel back to the manufacture and they said the barrel was good. Changed out the mounts no problem.

It’s a 30-06. I’m not a great shot and I have missed a couple of deer with it. My old mossberg seemed to always get it done for me. When I had misses I started to question the rifle and after taking my shaky hands out of the matrix I have found the rifle has some sort of issue. Looking down the tube I can’t find anything irregular. Just wondering if y’all have seen anything like this before.

Stop using copper solvent so much. It will frick with how your gun shoots. It's not necessary so often. I don't clean my rifle barrels until I see groups start to open up. That's often more than 250-300 rounds. Ask any precision shooter and they will tell you the same thing. Try shooting at 50 yards and see what happens. Also try different types of ammo. This isn't the first time I've heard of brownings that don't shoot well though. Could be the gun.

Also, if you are near BR and have a place to shoot, I wouldn't mind helping diagnosing it with you by shooting.

First question: did it ever shoot good?

Again, what grain are you trying to shoot and what’s the barrel twist? The x-bolt hunter is a 1:10 twist. ETA: That should be good enough to stabilize anything.

The flier that you’re getting, is it the 1st shot or one after a few shots.
If it’s the 1st shot, is it every time?
You need to shoot a few to foul the barrel prior to trying to shoot for groups.
Then the barrel needs to cool some (not completely cold) between shots.

I have a Browning BAR Safari 30.06 that I can get 1/2 inch groups on if I can hold it. Some people have had problems with the Nikon scopes.
Need to shoot a couple rounds after cleaning. Let it cool. Then shoot a three shot group. Let it cool. Like the fellow above said.
If that doesn’t work, try Federal Premium. Then try different bullet weights. I shoot Corelokts 180 grain pointed soft points. They have always worked for me.

That says a lot, not a fan of core locks, try different weights and brands. 30-06 has a ton of options. I have a 7-08 x mark and it’s a tack driver! Get you some DNZ bases and rings, if you can swing it, a better scope as well. Good luck!

Sure. Not saying you are a bad shooter but to get sub 2” groups at 100 yards your trigger pull has to be pretty good.
