I’m sure some fans certainly go overboard with the criticism, but is it really that surprising when fans of a team are upset and disappointed when one of their top players leaves?

Seems kind of a natural, honest reaction to me. Just as it’s unreasonable for fans to expect players to put their team/Program #1, it’s equally unreasonable for individual players to expect fans to put individual players #1. Of course fans put the program first ... that’s actually what creates the interest and $&$ and entire enterprise that the players get to flourish in to begin with.
